Bio - Demetri Sevastopulo

Financial Times, Washington Bureau Chief

I cover the Trump administration and run our Washington bureau. I spent 2015 and 2016 covering Donald Trump and the US presidential election. From 2009 to 2015, I was based in Hong Kong where I was Asia News Editor (running our Asia news operation and serving as global news editor during the Asia day) and later South China Correspondent. During a previous stint in Washington, I covered the Pentagon & CIA.

Over my career, I have reported from many places, including the US, China & Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, Russia, Iraq, Afghanistan, India and Cuba. I have covered a diverse range of stories, including the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, terrorism, Guantanamo Bay, cybersecurity, Hurricane Katrina, the Baltimore riots, North Korea, Sino-Japanese relations, South China Sea and East China Sea maritime disputes, Chinese manufacturing and labour unrest, Chinese president Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign, the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, the 2011 Japanese tsunami, and the Umbrella Revolution in Hong Kong.

I speak fluent Japanese, (rusty) Mandarin and basic Cantonese. I enjoy appearing on television & radio and public speaking. I grew up in Ireland, but have spent 25 years in Japan, China and the US. You can follow me on Instagram and Facebook and here is my full bio
